Kuvuka cafe is raising money for Suubi Trust to give cancer care to patients who would be without hope otherwise.

Kuvuka Cafe is approaching its 3rd birthday at the end of December, what better way to celebrate than to help bring hope to people and save some lives?! Many of us have experience of loved ones who have suffered from cancer. It’s an awful thing to go through, even when we know treatment of some kind is available to us. In Uganda any kind of cancer treatment is available only to a few, and those who get cancer are generally without hope. We intend to change this for as many people as we can afford to, and ask if you can help.

In November Kuvuka raised £60.90 at a “Feel Good” night.

The concept was born out of a frustration that when those of us no longer in our twenties want to go out and just have a good dance and a fun night, it always ends up marred by being bumped into by drunks, or for the females, fighting off irritating men. So we thought we’d do our own night, with some classic dance music from an excellent DJ, BYO drinks if you want to, and NO happy hour!

Kuvuka is a great venue for an exclusive event, but if this at all interests you, you need to book early to avoid disappointment, places are limited!

ALL of the takings will go to Suubi Trust (www.suubitruust.org.uk), our DJ is playing for free, we’ve got equipment free, and it’s being staffed by volunteers. Bring your own drinks means it’s a cheap night out after ticket cost, so if this isn’t an event that makes you feel good, I don’t know what will!

Feel Good Nights at Kuvuka Cafe

• We received £1,054 from individual supporters.
• An individual gave £400 to meet the cost of care for a young man at Hope Ward.
• Kuvuka gave £500 to support treatments given to patients at the Lira Clinic.

Of these patients, 73 were five years or under (27%) and 47 between 6-15 years old (17%).

Malaria and related conditions are by far the most prevalent with 118 patients (43%) being treated.

It costs us just £7.50 to provide care to our patients and the clinic has a monthly capacity to provide such treatment for about 200 patients. In 2008 we need to raise £18,000 which will treat 2,400 patients. So far we have raised more than £11,000 from the following sponsors:

In his Blog he writes:

It is a little known fact that coffee was first used in Uganda five centuries ago.

However, it was not roasted and used as a drink as it is today. The coffee bean had a key role in the Buganda ritual of brotherhood. Coffee plants grow a berry-like pod, each of which contains two coffee beans. When two Buganda men wished to cement their friendship they would split open one of these pods and extract the beans. They then made a small cut in their torso, put some of their blood in the bean and exchanged beans. As long as each had the other’s coffee bean they remained blood brothers.
