In 2008 Suubi Trust helped to support:

On Hope Ward 289 patients were admitted for complex medical care, including treatments for Cancer

At the Lira Clinic 2,535 patients were treated through the charity project

Suubi Trust sponsored Kenneth, a Clinical Officer in Lira, to receive Immunization training by the District, which enabled the clinic to be accredited as an Immunization centre and as a result, over a period of seven months, more than 50 children a month (a total of 409) were immunized at Lira Health Clinic.

Immunisations in July

Kenneth Odongo (Medical Clinical Officer at the Lira Clinic)

has sent us a report showing details of the 50 patients that he has treated with various immunisations in July, including Measles and Polio. Three quarters of those being treated are young children under the age of 5.

We recently received our first report outlining patients who have recently been immunised by Kenneth at the Lira Clinic.

It has taken a few months to get to this point. We received a gift from one of our sponsors in October to meet the cost of training for Kenneth and Miriam. They received the formal training in March and since then we have been able to source the drugs from the Government and start our immunisation programme.

Millenium Development Goal (MDG) #4 is to Reduce Child Mortality

Target: Reduce by two-thirds, between 1990 and 2015, the under-five mortality rate.

In Lira one child in 10 dies before its fifth birthday – that’s more than ten times the rate of children dying every year in wealthy countries like the UK. These young children die mostly from preventable illnesses such as acute respiratory infections (mostly pneumonia), diarrhoea, malaria, measles, HIV/AIDS and neonatal conditions – which are all avoidable through existing interventions. These conditions are regularly those being treated at the Lira clinic and immunisation is an important aspect in the control of many of these.

Immunisation Training

Suubi Trust provided funding to enable staff from the Lira Clinic to receive formal training in the use of Immunisation. Once trained our staff will be able to provide such immunisations and the Government will provide the essential drugs. Training took place during the week of the 3rd March and was attended by:

Miriam Muwumuza (Registered Midwife)

Workshop Objectives included:

To equip health workers from private health facilities with skills and knowledge about immunisation
Reduce infant mortality and morbidity rates through immunisation
To increase immunisation coverage in Uganda.
