In 2009, 5 pages were created and a total of £6,480 raised, thanks to all those who got involved.

I have only recently discovered this sad news. I would like to thank all that have donated time and money to the Suubi Trust, International Hospital Kampala, and those at Hope Ward that took great care of him during the year of his life that he spent there. Whilst I was there I saw him going from being a very sick little boy to a smiling, happy one, playing with some of his new toys.

Please continue to support Suubi Trust so it can continue to help more of those with serious illness without the means to help themselves.

Kuvuka cafe is raising money for Suubi Trust to give cancer care to patients who would be without hope otherwise.

Kuvuka Cafe is approaching its 3rd birthday at the end of December, what better way to celebrate than to help bring hope to people and save some lives?! Many of us have experience of loved ones who have suffered from cancer. It’s an awful thing to go through, even when we know treatment of some kind is available to us. In Uganda any kind of cancer treatment is available only to a few, and those who get cancer are generally without hope. We intend to change this for as many people as we can afford to, and ask if you can help.

The day was an enormous success with UGX 3,320,000 (GBP 1,072) raised through generous donations from individuals and corporate teams. Bead for Life, Mildmay and Voluntary Service Overseas all entered corporate teams of 10; the Paediatric Infectious Disease Clinic employees came out en-mass to support the event.
The money raised will allow Hope Ward to continue to provide medical services to those most in need.

A cancer treatment budget has been set at £2,000 per month for charity patients. The final two months of 2009 have just been covered by a donation of 12 million (Uganda Shillings) from IAA Healthcare.

About Hope Ward Cancer Care:

The word “cancer” in Uganda brings thoughts of death, confusion, and stigma. People feel hopeless and impotent with nowhere to turn. There have been great strides made with HIV and infectious diseases but cancer care has fallen by the wayside. Most people avoid seeking medical help until the cancer is advanced or spread and it is too late. Even should they try, there are too few resources and the treatments are unaffordable.

In the last 3 years, Hope Ward Cancer Care has been developed to tackle these needs. We have an excellent team, led by Dr. Helena Nam, which has provided care and treatment for 33 charity patients this year. We will bring you some of the patient stories in the next few postings.

We are hoping to raise £25,000 to enable this work to continue throughout 2010. We have a Just Giving page on which you can make an online donation. Please give generously.

Greetings from International Hospital Kampala,

Click here for the latest Hope Ward Newsletter which I’m sure you’ll find of interest. There are a number of patient stories which give a good summary of the type of care and treatment being provided by this team. In the first 6 months of this year we have met the cost of and provided treatment and care for more than 1,300 in-patient bed-nights.

I am very proud of the work being done on Hope Ward and the difference being made in the lives of some many. I just wish we could do more and perhaps with your continued help and support we can.

I recently agreed to setup a Cancer Care Fund to help meet the costs of consultation and treatments for those in need. We have agreed with Dr. Helena a monthly budget of 6m UGX, about £2,000 GBP. I was pleased to be able to commit 12m UGX, the first 2 months, as a gift from IAA HealthCare, our own private health scheme provider. I will provide some further information about our Cancer Care in the next few weeks. At the writing of this post, we have raised close to 18,000.00 USD…just 7,000.00 USD short of the 25,000.00 USD target. 15,000.00USD will go towards sponsoring a bed on Hope Ward for a year, and 3,000.00 USD will go towards the Nursing Scholarship Fund. We will continue to work towards meeting the goal for the scholarship fund (10,000.00USD to sponsor one student at University for whole program: Bachelors degree in Nursing, covers tuition and fees) before the end of the year.

Caroline worked with me at Wesleyan and has been a great help and support in raising funds and awareness for Suubi Trust. She has just posted this in response to Rose’s Walk:

I joined this cause and support the Subbi Trust because in my life, everyday, things are on tap when I need them – but for others this isn’t the case; imagine not being able to pop to the doctors or to have a child who is ill but you cannot get basic care for them? Suubi Trust needs support from as many people as possible to provide basic but LIFESAVING medicine and care for many men women and children in Africa. Even though I haven’t got a fortune to donate I know that every penny helps someone less fortunate than me.
