On the 17th of July Louise Seres and Daniel Wade will be climbing Africa’s highest mountain, Kilimanjaro. The trip is totally self funded so all money raised will go to charity.

The charities chosen, Suubi Trust and Kigezi Healthcare foundation (KIHEFO) are both working towards a better standard of healthcare for patients in Uganda.

Suubi Trust – Treats adults and children in Uganda at Hope ward located at Kampala International Hospital and also treats patients in clinics in Lira and Pader; all such care being essentially free of charge.

I am a 3rd year Pharmacology student currently sitting my final exams.

Last summer I travelled to Uganda and again I fell in love. I visited the International Hospital in Kampala and I was hugely taken by one particular ward, called the Hope Ward. This ward is run by the charity I am collecting for on this page. They treat patients who are not able to pay for their treatment. These people are generally the poorest people in Kampala, or refugees from the troubles in North Uganda, Rwanda, or DR Congo. They have a specialist cancer centre and the oncologist told me “it is very hard to determine a patient’s treatment by how much we had donated this month, as opposed to the treatment they need”.  But they make do.

It’s no wonder the HIV prevalence is 6.4% and climbing in Uganda!! It is with this in mind that I am appealing for funds to continue the comprehensive STI service that we have developed for the local community. STI control is proven to lead to a 40% reduction in transmission of HIV, so in Kampala, where STI prevalence is estimated to be about 9%, a comprehensive STI service can make a huge difference. Sadly, the funds through IMF (the charitable arm of the organisation) are limited and so if anyone feels the urge, donations would be most welcome via the following websites: Suubi Trust Blog or  Making a donation to Suubi Trust, earmarked for the STI clinic. £10 provides screening and treatment for 1 person with obvious knock-on benefits for that person’s sexual contacts too… so more for your money!!! KIHEFO  has been operating in Kabale since 2001 with Core functions that include:
Community mobilization and sensitisation on HIV/AIDS prevention; Voluntary Counseling and Testing for HIV; Treatment of opportunistic infections; Administration of ARVs; Care to HIV/AIDS Orphans and vulnerable children (OVC); Operational Research in health related issues and Nutrition supplements to Orphans and People Living with HIV/AIDS.

I have only recently discovered this sad news. I would like to thank all that have donated time and money to the Suubi Trust, International Hospital Kampala, and those at Hope Ward that took great care of him during the year of his life that he spent there. Whilst I was there I saw him going from being a very sick little boy to a smiling, happy one, playing with some of his new toys.

Please continue to support Suubi Trust so it can continue to help more of those with serious illness without the means to help themselves.

Kuvuka cafe is raising money for Suubi Trust to give cancer care to patients who would be without hope otherwise.

Kuvuka Cafe is approaching its 3rd birthday at the end of December, what better way to celebrate than to help bring hope to people and save some lives?! Many of us have experience of loved ones who have suffered from cancer. It’s an awful thing to go through, even when we know treatment of some kind is available to us. In Uganda any kind of cancer treatment is available only to a few, and those who get cancer are generally without hope. We intend to change this for as many people as we can afford to, and ask if you can help.

The day was an enormous success with UGX 3,320,000 (GBP 1,072) raised through generous donations from individuals and corporate teams. Bead for Life, Mildmay and Voluntary Service Overseas all entered corporate teams of 10; the Paediatric Infectious Disease Clinic employees came out en-mass to support the event.
The money raised will allow Hope Ward to continue to provide medical services to those most in need.

A cancer treatment budget has been set at £2,000 per month for charity patients. The final two months of 2009 have just been covered by a donation of 12 million (Uganda Shillings) from IAA Healthcare.
