The Touch Namuwongo project was launched with a large outreach health fair at the International Hospital Kampala in Namuwongo on Saturday 14th June 2008. This health fair reached more than 500 local people. The event brought together various public and private organizations (Uganda Aids Commission, Health Initiatives for the Private Sector, Aids Information Centre, International Hospital Kampala) all working together with International Medical Foundation with the goal of reaching out to the residents of Namuwongo and the greater Makindye division offering health education, Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) and referral for Antiretroviral Therapy (ARTs).
On the day 277 people from our local community received VCT. About 14% of these tested positive and were referred to our clinic where they will receive further counselling, testing (including CD4 count) and then be started on an appropriate course of ARTs.
In addition that day 77 individuals were able to visit our health centre and receive treatment for other conditions, including Malaria.
