Sophie is the midwife at our clinic in Lira. She is a Ugandan, Lango by tribe. She was born in 1980 in Iceme, Ojam District. She is single and has no children of her own, but has two orphans at home that she looks after. She finished her primary education in 1994, and was at Secondary School until 1999. After that she joined the Lira School of Enrolled and Comprehensive Nursing where she qualified as an enrolled midwife. She joined us in July, when our Lira clinic opened. Her focus has been on providing antenatal care for expectant mothers; we hope to expand our service so we are able to offer safe deliveries. At the moment Sophie needs training in voluntary HIV counselling and testing (VCT), as well as in the prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV (PMTCT). She had training on family planning in January, so that she can use the opportunity of her time with the mothers to help them with spacing of their children.
